Yahoo! sports has reported that an ongoing investigation into the Syracuse Basketball program and questions whether or not Syracuse University has properly self regulated itself regarding “possible violations” of its internal drug policy…..TEN YEARS AGO.

WOW..so who is smelling something just a little off here? Let’s break it down a little and get a brighter light shown on this allegation.

First the report is from anonymous sources. That could mean that anyone with any sort of connection to the program could be propagating this information. As a past news reporter, I understand that sources are important and for the common good need to be protected for our constitutional freedoms but let’s add this to some other issues I have with this story.

Timing: Is there anyone but myself finding the timing of this story disturbing by being released the last week of the regular NCAA Men’s basketball season? The Syracuse basketball team has finished the regular season with an impressive 30-1 record and have demonstrated play to back that record up. The way in which they have dispatched their opponents this year among the various controversies is doubly impressive.

Age: These violations date back at least 10 years from the alleged infractions. We as a society are bordering on near insanity when it comes to acceptance and forgiveness. Are we to punish the current team with “potential” super secret violations that “might” have occurred more than a decade ago? It’s as if the insane product liability tort system has morphed itself to the Syracuse basketball program. We all know how the current product liability legal system has worked for us.

Come on folks, let’s get a grip. We have superior sports to entertain us because we enjoy the games and the awesome talents to watch. We refuse to allow these players to be paid or compensated while at the same time expecting all of these talents to be role models. I’m sure many if not most are upstanding individuals in their collegian communities as well as their home communities. But, let’s not be naive and think that their talents has magic dust on their behaviors off the court. Please, whom among us would like our behaviors or more to the point of others, TEN YEARS AGO, be investigated, nationally reported and substantiated by “unknown sources” impact our lives of today.

Reporting this would lead one to believe that someone at Yahoo! sports might be trying to bolster their job in light of pending job losses at Yahoo!. Oh wait you say, that isn’t fair? Why not? Alright, then let’s just say that maybe heads should role at Yahoo! sports because “anonymous sources” said that these reporters were violating company policy regarding “recreational substance or substances” in the year 2001. So that isn’t true. Is it? Well, not to my knowledge yet the parallel is the same, just on different turf.

I am completely confident that the NCAA will conduct their investigation into this issue properly. It is simply unfortunate that the talent of today is working hard against such drivel. If it doesn’t involve the current set of Syracuse basketball players, then this story should have been placed on hold until post NCAA tournament play. Yahoo! sports should be ashamed to be so blatantly targeted.
